What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

At some point in our lives we will all be faced with difficult and unexpected changes. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy used to manage problem areas by shifting thought process to alter behaviours and feelings. Educating people to understand that although we cannot control every detail in the world around us, we can control how we respond and move through it.

CBT is forward focused, with your therapist supporting you to be your own agent of change. It is particularly effective for people suffering from anxiety or depression. Becoming aware of our own negative interpretations of situations, which are at times entirely outside our control, to turn distress into opportunity.

Job Loss

Redundancy can result in a change in your perceived status. Helping you focus on a clear path forward, adjusting work/life balance, and gaining satisfaction through new directions, vocational rehabilitation can provide answers and clarity in your next life chapter.

Relationship Issues

Helping people through a complex range of personal and professional relationship issues, from resolving breakdowns to alternative future life choices. Reviewing our perceptions of our selves to approach similar situations with a fresh outlook

Bereavement

Our ability to cope with the loss of a loved one is one of life’s greatest challenges, and we all deal with grief differently. Supporting you working to clear emotional obstacles and heal from loss.

Depression

It’s ok to feel sad at times, but when you’re feeling sad and miserable most of the time, over a long period of time, you may have depression. This can lead to feelings of hopelessness, poor concentration and social isolation. Helping you achieve small tasks, recognising mood changes and returning to activities that usually give pleasure, can restore a sense of achievement, closeness and enjoyment.

Injury and Disability

Fundamental changes to physical and/or cognitive ability can have far reaching mental and emotional impact. Seeing a difficult situation in a different light, adapting mindset and reimagining professional and personal interactions can lead to new beginnings.

Illness

The uncertainty of illness can result in sufferers requiring great lifestyle shifts. Assisting you in solution based self-management to better work through chronic and sudden illness.

Family Crisis

Positive solution based communication can be reached for those going through difficulty within the family unit. Patterns in behavior can often become self-perpetuating, maintaining or exacerbating negative thoughts and actions. Guided strategies to navigate out of habitual communication patterns can have long lasting impacts.

Anxiety

When you’re often feeling worried, on edge and panicky, this is called anxiety. You may experience physical symptoms such as racing heart, sweating and hyper-vigilance. These feelings can be so overwhelming that they interfere with your day to day life. Helping you restore some calm control of your life can alleviate these symptoms. Controlled breathing, reality checking and ordered thinking are some techniques to explore in order to put issues into perspective and prioritise their importance.
